On April 17, 2017, the political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The visiting delegation was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif.
During the consultations, the sides discussed issues of cooperation in the political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres. Among the priority areas of interaction the sides noted the cooperation in the framework of international organizations, primarily the UN. The parties expressed satisfaction with the mutual support of each other's international initiatives within the framework of various international organizations.
Noting the similarity of positions on ensuring peace, security and sustainable development in the region and the world as a whole, the sides expressed their commitment to further development of regional and international cooperation. In this context, the parties paid attention to the Caspian issues and discussed the issues of rendering assistance to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
During the talks, the sides focused on further development of Turkmen-Iranian cooperation in the fields of electric energy, oil and gas and transport. At the same time, it was noted the importance of strengthening traditional cultural and humanitarian contacts as an integral part of the Turkmen-Iranian relations.
After the meeting, R. Meredov and M. J. Zarif visited the photo exhibition dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, organized in the building of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. Then the Iranian Foreign Minister delivered a lecture to young diplomats, students and teachers of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
