Turkmenistan will join a number of international documents in the field of environmental protection

On March 26, 2020, a regular meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers was held in the format of a videoconference, at which topical issues of state life have been discussed.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov noted that one of the key vectors of the foreign policy of neutral Turkmenistan is cooperation with the UN and other authoritative organizations, including in the environmental field and in the sphere of ecology.

It was emphasized that Turkmenistan is currently a party to 20 multilateral international documents in the above area. In order to implement constructive initiatives of the Head of state aimed at implementing environmental diplomacy, as well as further developing partnerships within the framework of the United Nations, the Foreign Minister voiced a proposal on joining our country to a number of multilateral documents.

Among them: the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (the Bonn Convention), which entered into force in 1983 and the Agreement on the Protection of Afro-Eurasian Migratory Wet birds, adopted under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), adopted in 1999, and the 2016 Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Summarizing the report, esteemed President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that environmental protection and ecological safety issues are directly related to the achievement of the global Sustainable Development Goals. Putting environmental diplomacy as one of the priority vectors of its foreign policy, neutral Turkmenistan makes a significant contribution to strengthening international cooperation in the sphere of nature protection.

Speaking about this, President of Turkmenistan approved the proposal to join our country to the above-mentioned multilateral documents, instructing the Deputy Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister to continue work in this direction on a systematic basis.
