Meeting of the Heads of the International Seaports of Turkmenbashi and Baku

A delegation from Turkmenistan, headed by Director of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport Parahat Jumayev, who is in Azerbaijan on a working visit, met with Director of Baku International Sea Port LLC Eldar Salahov. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan Gurbanmammet Elyasov also participated in the talks.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are consistently strengthening their strategic partnership, paying particular attention to the development of logistics cooperation between the international seaports of Turkmenbashi and Baku (Alat). This cooperation aims to increase cargo traffic through the Caspian Sea, develop the Middle Corridor, and expand transport links between the two countries amid growing mutual trade turnover.

In recent years, the parties have worked actively to increase freight volumes and simplify cross-border and customs procedures. Reducing tariffs on maritime and rail services has facilitated the growth of multimodal transport and the expansion of transit container handling.

The development of the ports of Turkmenbashi and Baku (Alat) is aimed at transforming them into key logistics hubs in the Caspian Sea, serving international East-West corridors. The main route connecting the two ports handles oil, various cargo, and railcars. Following its modernization, the Turkmenbashi port has become a major transport hub, while the Baku port in Alat is consistently expanding its infrastructure, strengthening its role in both freight and passenger transportation and occupying an important place on the modern route of the Great Silk Road.

In addition, the parties discussed issues related to the development of the international transit and transport corridor Caspian Sea – Black Sea, including prospects for increasing cargo transportation through the ports of Turkmenbashi, Baku, Poti, Batumi, and Constanta. The importance of intensifying cooperation with all interested partners, including the European Union, was noted.

Emphasizing the global nature and broad prospects of this corridor, the meeting participants also discussed issues of establishing effective information exchange.
