President of Turkmenistan and the UN Secretary-General discussed the areas of cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals

On November 26, 2016 President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had a meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations Mr.Ban Ki-moon.

The Head of State thanked the distinguished guest for his personal participation in the Global Conference on the Sustainable Transport and expressed confidence that the forum under the auspices of the UN, will promote a balanced approach in dealing with pressing issues of regional and global development.

During the meeting the sides discussed prospects of further expansion of Turkmenistan-UN partnership, including in such priority fields as the achievement of sustainable development goals. In this regard, he noted the importance of the initiatives put forward by Turkmenistan concerning the enhancement of international cooperation in such important areas as regional and global security, energy, environment, and others.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed gratitude to the head of the United Nations for the support of international initiatives of Turkmenistan and, separately, for the selection of the Turkmen capital as the headquarters of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia. The location of this Centre in Ashgabat we perceive as a sign of great trust and respect for our neutral state, said President. During the meeting, he stressed the importance of Turkmenistan's contribution to peaceful development and the restoration of social and economic infrastructure of neighboring Afghanistan, which, in turn, has a positive impact on the situation in the region as a whole.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy United Nations Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Wu Hongbo and the Assistant UN Secretary General for Political Affairs, Mr. Miroslav Jenca.
