Discussions on cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)

On February 6, 2024, at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, a meeting was held between the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office in Geneva V.Hajiyev and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

During the meeting, the Turkmen side emphasized that the UN is a priority partner and Turkmenistan is committed to the values and principles underlying the UN system.

In this regard, Turkmenistan considers it important to maintain close contacts with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The special role of the Regional Office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia, created in 2008 in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), was noted.

In turn, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights noted that the Central Asian region is important in the context of cooperation in the field of fundamental human rights. It was noted that the UN OHCHR is committed to ensuring the protection of human rights for all people, expanding the powers and opportunities to exercise their rights and helping those responsible for observing these rights to achieve their implementation, as well as strengthening the capacity of civil society in order to effectively use UN human rights programs.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue to expand bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN OHCHR.
