Cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in the field of human rights

On October 31, 2017, a seminar was held in Ashgabat with the participation of representatives of the Interdepartmental Commission for Ensuring the Implementation of Turkmenistan's International Obligations in the Field of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. During the forum, foreign experts, in particular regional representatives of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNDP, briefed participants on the final recommendations of relevant UN committees in this field.

Participants stressed the need to further strengthen cooperation with international organizations, primarily with the UN, and also spoke in favor of continuing the practice of holding seminars, meetings and consultations with the participation of foreign experts on the preparation of national reports, reviews and the study of best practices in the field of human rights protection. The participants of the meeting also noted the growing role of Turkmenistan in solving urgent humanitarian issues.

It should be noted that the day before the Turkmen National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan held a regular meeting of the above-mentioned Commission. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Mejlis, a number of ministries and departments, law enforcement agencies, and public organizations.

During the meeting, reports on the work done by the Commission were heard, and directions for the further activities of this structure were discussed. In particular, these are issues of practical implementation of the "National Action Plan for Human Rights in Turkmenistan for 2016-2020", as well as the "National Action Plan for Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2015-2020".

On November 1-2, the seminar will be continued with the participation of the working group members at the Interdepartmental Commission for Ensuring the Implementation of Turkmenistan's International Obligations in the Field of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.
