International Conference “Health and Nutrition in a Changing Climate” held in Ashgabat

On 22 January 2026, the International Conference “Health and Nutrition in a Changing Climate” was held in Ashgabat. The event brought together heads of relevant ministries of Turkmenistan, representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Development Programme and other international organizations, as well as delegates from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, and Russia.

In statements by the Turkmen side, it was emphasized that agriculture, as one of the most important sectors of the national economy, plays a key role in strengthening food abundance in the country. The introduction of the “green” economy concept in the sector contributes to sustainable development and environmental well-being.

Turkmenistan is implementing the National Climate Change Strategy and, together with international organizations, the “One Health” concept. In this context, targeted measures are being taken to ensure food security and adequate nutrition under changing climate conditions, promote sustainable food production, and strengthen effective international cooperation to improve the environmental and socio-economic situation in the region and globally.

In their remarks, foreign delegates stressed that climate change has a direct and multifaceted impact on food systems and public health. It was noted that Central Asia and neighboring countries face common challenges that require coordinated and science-based solutions.

Conference participants highlighted the importance of reforming approaches to food systems to reduce risks arising from land salinization and water scarcity, as well as the need to develop strategies that preserve biodiversity and ensure access to high-quality food under climate change conditions.

During the discussions, special attention was given to the “One Health” concept. Speakers noted that integrating its principles into national strategies contributes to the creation of safe food production systems resilient to external impacts.

Within the framework of the Conference, regional initiatives aimed at strengthening climate resilience in Central Asia were reviewed. It was emphasized that joint projects facilitate the exchange of best practices and innovative methods for introducing drought-resistant crops.

In addition, the importance of international cooperation and the active involvement of specialized UN agencies in implementing programs to adapt agriculture to climate change was underscored.

At thematic sessions, emphasis was placed on the fact that climate change requires a revision of nutrition standards and stronger control over food quality. It was noted that extreme heat and changes in soil composition lead to a decline in the nutritional value of agricultural crops.

Speakers also emphasized that regional cooperation should focus on creating cross-border mechanisms for monitoring climate-related risks. Particular attention was paid to raising public awareness of healthy nutrition.

During the discussions, it was noted that financing mechanisms for environmental projects should become more accessible to countries in the region, and the importance of intensifying efforts to mobilize funds to support agricultural producers was highlighted.

The sustainability of food production systems is directly linked to social well-being. Therefore, ensuring access to affordable and environmentally friendly food products is a priority in the context of global climate change.

Emphasis was also placed on strengthening the research and scientific capacity of countries in the region.

In conclusion, it was emphasized that the recommendations and strategies developed during the Conference will make a significant contribution to international efforts to address the impacts of climate change.

Within the framework of the International Conference, project documents were also signed.
