On December 14, 2016 the three-day seminar entitled "Effectively countering the financing of terrorism" started its work in Ashkhabad. The seminar was organized by the UN Task Force on Counter-Terrorism Implementation (CTITF) and the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), with the support of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the European Union financial support.
The seminar was attended by the representatives of the Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) that work in the various ministries and agencies of Central Asian countries, observers from the countries concerned, the representatives of the relevant regional and international organizations and CTITF structures working in the area of combating the financing of terrorism.
The main objectives of the workshop are to train FIUs and raising their awareness on combating the financing of terrorism, the exchange of regional and international experience among the FIUs and the development of joint actions and projects to build capacity in the area of combating the financing of terrorism.
This workshop is the fifth in a series of seminars organized by the CTITF and UNRCCA to support cooperation between the countries of Central Asia. The first workshop was held in November 2013 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and was dedicated to regional dialogue between the leaders of religious institutions and security forces in countering extremism. The second workshop was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in July 2014 and was aimed to bring the media to the fight against terrorism in the region. The third seminar was held in March 2015 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and was dedicated to border security and management issues in order to combat terrorism. The fourth workshop was held in March 2016, with the aim to provide support to the countries of the region to combat the radicalization issues.
