International meeting on "Successful experience of Turkmenistan on Reduction of Statelessness"

Today, on February 20, 2017 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan there held an international meeting entitled "Successful experience of Turkmenistan on Reduction of Statelessness."

The meeting was attended by the heads of the ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, heads of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan, Turkmen ambassadors and consuls, working abroad, as well as employees of the diplomatic service of Turkmenistan.

Speakers at the meeting noted the importance of statelessness issues on the international agenda and its significant impact on the aspects of multilateral partnership not only in humanitarian, but also in the political and socio-economic spheres. In this context, it was noted the decisive role of the United Nations, its specialized agencies and institutions, the UNHCR, IOM and other authoritative bodies.

Based on ideals of humanism, principles of democratic development and the modern legal society, Turkmenistan under the leadership of the President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov conducts a peace-loving foreign policy, aimed at broadening and strengthening of comprehensive cooperation with different countries and authoritative international organizations.

The participants of the meeting stressed that Turkmenistan is demonstrating a strong commitment to its international obligations, actively involved in addressing the issues of migrants, refugees and stateless persons, both at the national and international levels. Fruitfully cooperating with authoritative international organizations, Turkmenistan is a permanent member of the Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, a member of the IOM and rightly positioned itself as a strategic member of the global international processes.

As its known according to the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan, 1381 people from the number of stateless persons had been granted the Turkmen citizenship. This is the first humanitarian act of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov after taking office of the President of Turkmenistan.

Then the participants of the International Meeting "Successful experience of on Reduction of Statelessness," went to the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan, where they took part in the solemn ceremony of handling the passports of the citizen of Turkmenistan to the persons without citizenship.
